NGPF Speaker Series: After twenty years teaching economics and personal finance at San Lorenzo High School, Judy Smith noticed something crucial: students who only learn about personal finance as an individual responsibility can feel powerless in the face of systemic barriers. That's why she created a mini-unit on economic inequality and solutions that she teaches after students complete their personal finance portfolios. In this session, Judy will share her framework for teaching solutions to economic inequality, how she structures student choice and creative demonstrations of learning, and why addressing systemic issues alongside personal finance skills prepares young adults to think about money as both a personal and civic responsibility.
