Question of the Day: What 3 jobs are projected to be the fastest growing over the next decade?

Answer (based on percentage growth in job category):

  • Solar photovoltaic installers
  • Wind turbine service technicians
  • Home health aides

Hat tip to NGPF Fellow Charles Kafoglis for sending along this insightful Atlantic article about jobs for the future. Here's the chart that shows both percentage growth leaders as well as how many new jobs will be created for those specific job titles (math teachers will love this one too):

Questions:

  1. Which jobs on the list will see the largest increases in number of new jobs created over the next decade?
  2. Can you come up with any future trends or themes based on the jobs that are on this list (e.g. aging population will require more home health aides)?
  3. Did any of the jobs appearing on this list surprise you?
  4. Which jobs on the list do you think provide the highest salaries? What do you think are the educational qualifications required to get these jobs?
  5. Did this list of jobs impact how you think about your future career?

Here's the ready-to-go slides for this Question of the Day that you can use in your classroom.

Tim Ranzetta

Tim's saving habits started at seven when a neighbor with a broken hip gave him a dog walking job. Her recovery, which took almost a year, resulted in Tim getting to know the bank tellers quite well (and accumulating a savings account balance of over $300!). His recent entrepreneurial adventures have included driving a shredding truck, analyzing executive compensation packages for Fortune 500 companies and helping families make better college financing decisions. After volunteering in 2010 to create and teach a personal finance program at Eastside College Prep in East Palo Alto, Tim saw firsthand the impact of an engaging and activity-based curriculum, which inspired him to start a new non-profit, Next Gen Personal Finance.
